I worked as a UX Consultant for Sustainably App to help assess their persistent problem of low user retention. I advised Sustainably App's team on three occasions over several months, and I'm proud of the changes implemented due to my feedback.
Before:
Challenge:The CEO of Sustainably App found me on Upwork for help with his guided nutiriton and weight loss app. Unfortunately, his team didn't have UX research or user information available. So, this project was unique in that I acted as both a prospective user and as a consultant that could give advise on any sticking points. This was a challenging experience due to the lack of available research, but I applied UX best principles and advised with empathy for users as a core priority.Insights:My UX review of the Sustainably App revealed several key areas for improvement. I suspected that the most hindering for users were:• Early sticking points such as an overlong onboarding process and a complicated and unintuitive meal preferences section
• A cluttered interface caused by the inclusion of automatic meal recommendations
• Redundancy in certain features causing a poorly directed user journeyI also identified several issues regarding the structure of the UI, alienating language, and grammar and punctuation.
Implementation:After my assessment, Sustainably App's team removed the meal suggestions which automatically loaded upon launching the app. Instead, meal recommendations could be toggled on and off, and a "Food Wizard" was created to offer more directed guidance. My suggestions for a shorter, simplified onboarding were also applied, improving usability throughout the app.Result:These changes helped Sustainably App become much more streamlined, with a cleaner and less overwhelming interface. Sticking points were minimized which helped guide users and keep them engaged in their experience.Metrics:I do not have access to Sustainably App's current performance data. However, the changes inspired by my suggestions were implemented in September of 2022 and have been maintained.
